GEORGE GREENOUGH "BEYOND SURFING" : PHOTO EXHIBIT AT MARITIME MUSEUM    Thru March 2005
10-5 daily. This popular exhibit is about surfing icon and innovator George Greenough. Greenough grew up in Montecito, and much of his pioneering in film, and wave-riding surfboard and boat design, was developed and tested in local waters. Greenough's lifelong passion for capturing wave-riding on film, his revolutionary designs  and eccentric lifestyle have made him a living surf legend.  See the original wooden model of the modern hi-aspect ratio fin, with its ability to change direction while maintaining high speeds. There are also several of Greenough's negative buoyancy spoon kneeboards that have incredible flex capabilities and allow him to ride deeper and longer in the "pocket" than most anyone else. These developments were the primary reason the longboard fell out of favor in the late 1960s. Rare carbon-fiber surfboards and sailboards built by Greenough will be on display, as well as the first carbon-fiber windsurfing mast ever created and rarer still surfboard templates hand-cut by Greenough, and water camera housings used while filming such movies as Big Wednesday and Crystal Voyager.
EXHIBIT CONTRIBUTORS: The list is a virtual "who's who" of surfing culture: Dennis Aaberg, Chuck Ames, Bernie Baker, Steve Bissell, Ian Cairns, Spencer Croul, Albert Falzon, Skip Frye, LeRoy Grannis, Greg Huglin, Bob McTavish, Dan Merkel, Steve Pezman, Peter Townend, Renny Yater, and Nat Young, as well as George Greenough himself, and many others. $6 for Adults; $3 for seniors, students, and youth; $1 for children aged 1-5.
LIFE CHRONICLES ELDERLY DOCUMENTARIES: (805) 966-3411 or   lifechronicles@cox.net
LifeChronicles, a non-profit organization in Santa Barbara, California, that was founded in 1998 by CEO Kate Carter does just that that. Carter and her volunteer student crew make videos about people who are dying or involved in other forms of health crises (referrals from doctors, hospices, and most medical support agencies). The completed videos incorporate family photographs and music interspersed with life stories, personal messages, and poignant life memories. LifeChronicles does not charge for its services - it relies on grants, donations, and fundraising. Carter utilizes the talent of media and production students from local high schools, community colleges, and universities to do the filming and editing(including UCSB & SBCC). To date, more than 200 videos have been made (thanks to 80+ student volunteers). In 2004, Carter received the NFL Community Quarterback Award and grant. Carter has also appeared on "Oprah."

LOBO MEDIA PRODUCTION: 2 NEW IMAX FILMS: Mal Wolfe, directing & producing
1) NEW GUINEA: Island of a Thousand Voices, (spring 06 release) is the first of the Expeditions for Knowledge series. The film is based on a unique anthropological characteristic -- the fact that, through 50,000 years of isolation, almost a thousand village societies, existing in close proximity to one another developed distinct cultures and individual languages. As a result, over one-third of the World's languages are spoken within an area of 342,000 sq. miles. The world's second largest island, New Guinea, is also one of the most mysterious places on Earth. This film will take the viewer into some of the deepest and most inaccessible regions of the island and explore some their unusual cultures, while documenting tribal interaction, and the effects of 20th century development on these indigenous cultures.
2) GHOSTS OF THE GRAND CIRCLE: in pre-production and completely funded, this film will focus on the beauty, the history, the people and the cultures of the "Grand Circle," a 1400-mile loop (starting in the Southwest corner of Utah and spilling over its borders into Colorado and Arizona) connecting seven of the United States' most magnificent National Parks; Bryce Canyon, Zion, Capital Reef, Arches, Canyonlands, Grand Canyon North Rim, and Mesa Verde.  This film will also include the history of the people and cultures that made this region remarkable.

The Rise of Citizen Media - October 26, 6 pm, McCune Room IHC, UCSB
The Alliance for Creative Commerce is co-sponsoring this conversation with J.D. Lasica and Doc Searls.
2005 has seen an explosion of participatory media, as users bypass the traditional media to create and share their own works at outlets like Ourmedia.org, Current.tv and NowPublic.com. What's behind this phenomenon? Are we seeing a fundamental shift in our relationship with the media? How does grassroots media differ from traditional media? What happens when we all become part of the personal broadcasting revolution, and how do we know whom to trust anymore when everyone is a publisher? www.cits.ucsb.edu/dss_calendar_04-05.htm, www.thealliance.us
