MEET THE NEW FILM COMMISSIONER
:
On October 15, 2001, Martine White became the new Santa Barbara County Film Commissioner. With more then twenty years experience, Martine's extensive background includes production coordinator, A.D., producer, writer, off-line editor, television host, extras casting, and sound assistant. In 1988, she advanced to location management, and began working with film commissions around the country on major features. Martine has more than thirty feature credits, including Batman and Robin, Absolute Power, and Sister Act II. ON LOCATION IN SANTA BARBARA COUNTY:
2001 credit highlights: Black Orchid, starring Meryl Streep and Nicholas Cage filmed at Earl Warren Showgrounds; Ripley's Believe It or Not "talent" cozied up to local leeches on Lake Cachuma; GQ Magazine used our spectacular coastline as a backdrop; Wedding of a Lifetime was shot all over the county; and Mission Vacation, a Nickelodeon pilot, capitalized on Carpinteria's authentic small town charm.

Recent projects completed in Santa Barbara County include Cadillac, Puma, Saturn, Kathy Ireland Apparel, Nickelodeon, Discover California, The Lampshade, Anthropologie, Bon Marche, and Lucky Magazine.

The Santa Barbara International Film Festival brought the usual array of celebrities (Andy Garcia, Angelica Houston, Sean Penn—to name a few) and "techies" for screenings, panels, and presentations; "Digital Days," in conjunction with the festival, was a big success with seminars, filmmaker discussions, and exhibitors such as Quick Time and Moviola. Keep an eye out for the festival documentary, produced in a collaborative effort by the local production community.

NEW SANTA BARBARA PRODUCTION RESOURCE:
The Santa Barbara production community formed a new organization, the South Coast Alliance of Media Professionals (SCAMP), an excellent resource for fulfilling any of your production needs in Santa Barbara County. Check out their web site:

LOCATION UPDATE:
Return to Freedom Ranch is a local sanctuary off Highway 1 for wild mustang horses. Santa Maria Valley Railroad, a private railroad available for filming, stretches through agricultural lands from Santa Maria west to Guadalupe. Melville Winery, a newer addition to Santa Barbara County wine country, lies just off of Highway 246 on the outskirts of Lompoc, and exudes true Tuscan ambiance. Visit
www.melvillewinery.com to see for yourself. Vandenberg Air Force Base eagerly welcomes military projects (sorry, no commercials). The new CONDOR EXPRESS, a high-speed vessel that can reach the Channel Islands in just 45 minutes, made its Santa Barbara debut this March! SANTA BARBARA COUNTY FILM DEVELOPMENT MEETING HIGHLIGHTS:
The 2nd Santa Barbara County Film Development meeting, under the direction of new Film Commissioner, Martine White, featured presentations by Karen Constine, California Film Commissioner, and James Fitzpatrick, Director of Government and Production Affairs, MPAA. Local presenters included Guy Smith of SCAMP and Laurel Walsh of Women in Film Santa Barbara. The permit panelist discussion focused primarily on establishing a "one-stop-shop," and streamlining the county's permit process. The next meeting will take place May 3, 2002 at 10:00am; location TBA.
